  • Inmate Ministry

"for I was in prison and you came to me" (Matthew 25:36)

Prisoners behind bars, victims of crime, families torn apart by incarceration—all are loved by God and worthy of our attention.  We desire to care for those in jail/prison and to walk beside those who are transitioning back into society.

  • Freedom Group

"for I was in prison and you came to me" (Matthew 25:36)

    Starting fall 2016.

We pursue and live out gospel-centered community through Recovery Groups. These groups give men and women a safe place to pursue redemption in Christ from sin and suffering. We meet every Sunday  at 7 p.m. in our Kids Downtown space.

The issues addressed in this group fall into three broad categories: suffering primarily as a result of a person's sin (ex. addictions), suffering primarily as a result of a person being sinned against (ex. abuse) and suffering primarily as a result of a person living in a fallen world (ex. infertility).

  • Counseling and Mental Wellness

Our counseling ministry exists to serve those who are hurting and struggling with the difficult issues of life.  We look to the Bible as the guide to life and its struggles. This ministry team is here to serve those who desire change and growth in their lives.

Ethiopia

To fulfill the  “multiplying the Kingdom of God in Staunton, Virginia, and to the ends of the earth” part of Church Downtown’s vision statement, we partner with Project HOPEFUL Awassa, which is directed by our Ministry Team Leaders, Greg and Charisa Knight.

Project HOPEFUL’s direct care efforts in Awassa, Ethiopia, are focused on vulnerable children and their families. Our goal is to keep families together and ensure access to education for their children, and to help families achieve financial independence through vocational training and initial financial support.

There are many ways that you can be involved in our partnership  Project HOPEFUL Awassa.  There is a child/family sponsorship program (Family In the Gap) for $30 per month, and there are many available children that you can be connected to, pray for, and help to support.  You can see a list of children who still need FIG sponsor on their Facebook page.

We have many individuals in the church who currently sponsor children, and our own Kids Downtown are FIG sponsors for a young boy, Natnael.

Project HOPEFUL Awassa also has many initiatives to support vulnerable children and women in Ethiopia. You can donate towards bibles, mosquito nets, clean water, purchase a cow or goat and other things.  There are also several trips during the year that you can join.

Email our Missions Team with any questions.

Caring for Orphans & Widows

  • PROVIDE FOR THEIR NEEDS

Project HOPEFUL Awassa works to pair children in Ethiopia with a Family In the Gap (FIG) for $30 per month. This sponsorship provides the child with necessities such as food, clothing, clean water, medical care, and education.

You can also provide income training and a business for a widow for $250 or a cow for a family for only $120.

Email Charisa Knight to support children who still need a FIG or for any of these other ministry opportunities!

  • PRAY FOR THEM

Pick a waiting child and pray for him or her and the future adoptive family. Pray for children in foster care in our area and the families that foster. Pray for ministries that support orphans.

  • SPEAK UP FOR THEM

CASA volunteers are voices for abused and neglected children in court. CASA volunteers are trained and supervised to gather information that helps judges decide the best possible outcome for children in foster care. Visit CASA's website to learn more.

  • SUPPORT THOSE WHO SUPPORT THEM!

Mow, babysit, or organize meals for foster parents. Pray with them and tell them you appreciate what they do. Encourage families that adopt by providing meals or showers when their child comes home.

Support organizations who give grants to families adopting such as Show Hope (www.showhope.org ).

Host an orphan for the summer or winter holidays. We have local people who have done this that we can also connect you to! Visit New Horizon's website for more information.

  • ADOPT OR FOSTER

Give a child a home through international or domestic adoption or foster care. Charisa or Greg Knight would love to talk more with you about adoption.
